Introducing Gemma
A native of Poland, Gemma received her formal education at
the Academy of Music in Warsaw where she graduated with a
Master's degree. Then in Geneva, Switzerland, under the renowned
Henryk Szeryng, she went on to win First
Prize in Virtuosite as a solo violinist.
Subsequently, residing in Geneva and Paris, Gemma performed
regularly in chamber music concerts in Europe, South America
and Japan. Dwelling in the classical music genre since age
five, as well as experiencing the life and flavors of many
different cultures, Gemma has managed to cultivate an individual
mode of expression. She started to compose her own music and
songs with French, Polish and English lyrics. In Paris, she
produced a one woman show at the Theatre Espace Marais, also
designing her own costumes. It was at this time that she came
to the attention of the great jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson,
who, impressed with her voice, scat singing and violin improvisations,
suggested she move to America and expand her style - which
she did.
Presently, this "New Yorker" with a French passport
makes recordings as a singer, violinist and composer with
the best musicians in the field, as well as working on new
projects - children's books with companion CDs. As an author
of those stories, she engages her talented brother Alexander
Sroczynski as an illustrator, but sometimes she uses her own
drawings.
Her latest passion is painting. She feels her work is an
expression of inspirational energy flowing through her. She
says - "I just have to be ready to receive the blessings
for which I am grateful."
Gemma also continues to play part-time in the first violin
section of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra at Lincoln Center.
She's one funny, crazy, busy lady!!!
